ABWAB Photography Exhibition
Behind every closed door, there is a life being lived, an untold story of which the details are left to the imagination of the observer.
Fascination for doors, old doors, has led me to capture over a hundred doors from various parts of the world, some of which are exhibited here today and some of which no longer exist. Some of the exhibited photos were taken with film camera before moving to digital. Even though my photographed subjects are of still images, it is beyond these closed doors that lives were lived, conversations were held and feelings were shared. Why Doors? My parents, like thousands of Palestinians were forced to leave their homes in 1948, taking nothing or little of their belongings except their keys. "We still have the keys to our houses" a phrase that I heard repeatedly from relatives and parent's friends while narrating the dire stories of their exodus....To them, the door keys became an evidence of their belonging, a symbol of hope to return to their homeland; to me, it became a source of imagination, a birth of a million questions of what might have, could have been if those keys could still open these doors.... Thus my fascination for doors. Each door has a character; some invite you to knock, others deserted, but the worst are those to which you have the keys but cannot open.
I dedicate this exhibit to refugee children. It is my way of helping them regain some of their stolen childhood and innocence. All proceeds will go towards meeting their most basic needs from staying warm to simply playing....I hope that my images will contribute in alleviating some of their suffering.
A special thank you goes out to the friends and relatives who encouraged and helped me in realizing this exhibition and for supporting me throughout its preparation. My gratitude also goes to Dar Al Mussawir for their professional guidance and for providing the space to share my passion with you.
I hope my doors will lead you into your own path of imagination like they led me into mine...
Enjoy the exhibition.
