The food website tasteatlas placed Lebanese shawarma at the top of the list of the 100 best sandwiches in the world, after receiving the highest rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars.
The website indicated that the best place to eat shawarma in Lebanon is the "Barbar" restaurant located in the Hamra area in the capital Beirut.
It stated that the seasoned and grilled shawarma on a skewer is a delicious meat meal in the Middle East, and its origins date back to the era of the Ottoman Empire, while its name stems from the Arabic pronunciation of the Turkish word çevirme (cheferme), which means the rotating skewer on which the meat is cooked.
Shawarma is made from either lamb, turkey, chicken, beef, or a mixture of different types of meat that are cooked slowly for hours and soaked in their juices and fats, which gives it unparalleled tenderness, but the real secret behind the perfect shawarma lies in the marinade.
It is worth noting that the list of the 100 best sandwiches did not include any Arab recipe, except for the Lebanese shawarma in first place, which is distinguished by its seasoning from other Arab and Middle Eastern countries, noting that the Turkish doner came in third place.
