Azadea Foundation, an NGO managed, financed, and sponsored exclusively by Azadea board members and employees, celebrated Earth Day, for the second year in a row, by launching the flagship interactive and educational ‘ENVIROTHON’.  The annual event, hosted at the Rene Mouawad Sanayeh Garden, witnessed 130 children ages 10 and 11, from five public and private schools in Beirut, competing against one another on a variety of environmental topics.  The winning school, Patriarchal College at Rabweh’s prize included a ‘green makeover’ in their schoolyard and an exclusive invitation to Azadea Foundation’s next plantation day event.

The competition, the first of its kind in the country, was created to engage and educate students in order to become better informed about the environment, plantation and nature conservation.  It also aims to build the knowledge capacity of teachers regarding this subject.  Science teachers from each participating school underwent a training session with the Association for Forest Development and Conservation (AFDC), the establishing partner for this event, to be able to share this knowledge with their respective students prior to the competition.  Furthermore, the participating children went through several experimental and knowledge stages during the event which helped them learn the GLOBE protocol with AFDC. During the full-day competition, students performed specific studies on soil, water, waste sorting, paper recycling and land cover protocols in each station, to collect scientific data about their local environment and measure specific indicators based on their acquired knowledge.

Marwan Moukarzel, Chairman of Azadea Foundation, stated that “We as a Foundation believe in sustainable initiatives, especially ones that are founded on education and where younger generations are given the opportunity to learn through experimenting and innovation”.  He also continued to mention that “our objective at Azadea Foundation is to empower the future generations with environmental knowledge turning them into conscious guardians of our country.

The jury, comprised of representatives from Azadea Foundation, AFDC and Ms. Sonia Najem, representative from the Ministry of Education, were responsible for selecting the best performance.  The performances ranged from poem readings to musical performances, as well as short plays.

Through its ‘green’ mission, Azadea Foundation continues to spread environmental education and innovation in finding environmental solutions among our rising generations.
