The young girl photographed crying as Germany lost to England in their Euro 2020 clash last week has asked that the £36,000 ($49,000) raised in her honour be donated to charity.
After the photo began to circulate on social media, it soon became clear not everyone had nice things to say - with screengrabs showing some comments making references to Nazis or calling the anonymous child a 's**t'.
In the wake of the cruel pile-on, a JustGiving page was set up to show that 'not everyone from the UK is horrible', with an aim of raising £500 for the little girl.
However, within just over a week, the campaign reached a whopping £36,166 from 3,248 donors.
The family of the child have since come forward to request that the money is donated to UNICEF, the United Nations' children's charity, an update on the crowdfunding page confirmed.
A statement from the family said: "In the interests of our daughter and our family we would like to remain private however we wish to thank everyone for your amazing support.
"Our daughter would like to request your generous donations go to UNICEF, knowing that your kindness will do good."
A statement from JustGiving said the family's decision was testament to their 'spirit of kindness and belief that society is better when people are kinder to one another', and that the 'legacy of the support from thousands of donors is that thousands of children from around the world will benefit'.
