On the occasion of our beloved Lebanon’s Independence Day, I can’t help but think about how we as parents can shape our children to become patriotic adults, and how we can extend the love for our country into more than just one day.
1. Respect the Lebanese Flag
Let us teach our children the symbolism of our flag, so that the mere sight of the white, red and green instills a deep respect which is a result of an understanding of its meaning.
2. Independence
By this I mean the child’s independence and ability to choose and voice his opinion. When we parents give them the freedom of expression, we mimic the ideology of an independent country.
3. Respect Rules
These might be house rules, school rules or municipality rules. Things such as not littering, not speeding, putting a seatbelt on while explaining to your child why or why not we do certain actions is a great way to reflect a model citizen’s behavior.
4. Awareness
Every child should be aware of Lebanese history and rich heritage. For young children historical facts might be hard to grasp so we might need to recreate an easy story that is relatable, and we can also focus on tidbits and trivia about our geography, discoveries and important figures.
5. National Anthem
It is essential that our children recognize, understand the lyrics and can sing along to the national anthem. It is also a must that while the anthem is playing, there is complete silence from distractions and the utmost respect.
6. Monuments
Take advantage of public holidays and weekends to visit important monuments and landmarks that reflect the Lebanese history, make touring fun so that your child enjoys learning.
7. Independence Day
During the days leading up to November 22, allow your child to engage in some celebratory fun. Have them dress up in an army costume, work together on some crafts and create the Lebanese flag, listen to the anthem, and let this day to be as important to them as other holidays.
8. Teach by Example
Last but not least, lead by example. A child will listen to what you say but in the end it’s the actions that count. Get yourself in the patriotic mood by being a good citizen every day, and celebrate it a little extra on a day like today!
Happy Independence Day!
