They say Beirut is a kin to Paris of the region and the party capital of the Middle East. While it may have its shortcomings, it's still a gem many desire to travel to. Needless to say, a city as appreciated as Beirut, doesn't come cheap.
As reported by The 2018 Cost of Living Index produced by crowd-sourced global database Numbeo, in An-Nahar, the cost of living in Beirut ranked 299th among 540 cities around the world and the third highest in comparison to 20 Arab cities.
The database sourced multiple data points, including cost of health care, traffic, living, crime, and pollution, from more than four million prices in almost 7,000 cities.
The studies show that the cost of living per month in Beirut can reach up to $ 2,756 for a family of four, excluding rent. Just as astounding, is the cost of living alone for a month, which amounts to over $750, not including rent.
It may come as a surprise that even the cost of basic consumer goods, from sneakers to shampoo, are considered more expensive than those in Abu Dhabi, Greece, and parts of Florida.
According to Numbeo's Rent Index, Beirut ranked 140th place globally, 4thamong Arab cities, and is only cheaper than three Arab cities - Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha. The Groceries Index finds that Beirut ranks 350th place globally, and 7thamong Arab cities. When it comes to food and drinks, the Restaurant Index ranks Beirut in 240th place globally, and in 2nd place among Arab cities.
